Kannawidan: Pride of the Ilocano Culture

Ilocos Sur is a beautiful province located in the northern part of Luzon. It is a province rich in culture that represents the ancient Spanish and Filipino heritage. To show and share their treasures to the whole world, the locals conceived a festival that highlights these cultural traditions and they called it the “Kannadiwan Festival”. This festival at the end of January celebrates the best of Ilocos Sur culture, from traditional dress and folk dance to tribal rituals and marching band contests.

During Kannawidan, many visitors are coming from Manila, Cavite, Laoag City and Nueva Ecija to name a few. Believing that they also have different culture from others. This festivity would help others to display their own culture. This proves that that festivals create meaningful social interaction among people which overpass the imposed social boundaries and can enhance social networks, and the social fabric of a community is strengthened. But when this covid-19 has reached our country, many events have been cancelled, like the 25th Panagbenga Flower Festival and other events. But many citizens of ilocos disagrees for cancelling the kannawidan festival, so the provincial government decided to have a simpler annual celebration of the Kannawidan festival, without cancelling this festival during this pandemic, they must face the challenges and be responsible for the decision they made when going to the kannawidan festival. One of this challenges is being strict on following health protocols like social distancing, using of face mask and face shield and etc. we must not let our guard down when going to crowded places since many visitors will come to ilocos from different regions, to prevent the spread of corona virus.

Even if the Kannawidan festival is not cancelled, do not let your guard down because you don’t know if you had a contact with a covid-19 positive. So you must strictly follow all health protocols to prevent the spread of this pandemic and be responsible in your action.
